Paradise Private Hospital is a general and specialist private health care provider with 14 permanent medical professionals and 10 visiting specialists providing locum services to cover our 24-hour operations. The Hospital is a modern 40 bed facility and has Obstetric, Surgical, Pediatric and Adult medical care facilities with 9 doctors’ consulting rooms, Laboratory, X-ray, Ultrasound Scan Imaging Services and Pharmacy.
Our staff are highly skilled in emergency response and deal with a variety of patient cases and clinical scenarios. These include having consistent exposure to birthing procedures, surgical procedures and acute illnesses presented at the Hospital on a daily basis providing staff the necessary retention of skills to respond to and manage a range of medical scenarios.
Paradise Private Hospital has been providing medical retrieval and medical evacuation services for higher care in Port Moresby and aboard. Paradise Private Hospital has an Emergency response facility and currently operates 2 ambulances. The Accident and Emergency Unit was opened in 2007. The unit aims to provide immediate, safe and competent emergency care to all patients in the following areas:
Cardiac Testing Unit
The hospital has recently installed a treadmill, to undertake and record exercise stress tests and conduct echo-cardiography. This enables staff to also transmit Holter monitor recordings and stress test results to Queensland for official reporting of results by a cardiologist there. Standard 12 lead ECG’s undertaken in the hospital is reported by a cardiologist at Port Moresby General Hospital. Full test comprises of ECG, Holter and Stress test incorporating the treadmill machine.
The ICU has 3 ventilated ICU beds with full life support capacity and up to 7 days for stabilization of life threatening patients. The ICU was commissioned in September 2016.
We recognize the increasing trend of lifestyle related diseases that are affecting our communities especially the middle to high income earners thus the establishment of a Wellness and Lifestyle clinic to provide essential services to our clients which entails full medical assessments. The Hospital also has an Overseas Medical Specialists visitation program to have access to in-country reviews, second opinions & specialized consultative discussions leading to positive remedial action for the patients. The Hospital has two operating theatres: one for major surgeries and a minor operating theatre for small procedures. The main operating theatre was commissioned for operations in 2007 and is fully staff with senior doctors and nursing staff and is under the supervision of a senior Anaesthetist Dr. H. Paiva. The main operating theatre provides diagnostic and therapeutic surgical and anaesthetic interventions for the purpose of improving quality of life to all patients. The theatre caters for all surgical patients that need elective or emergency surgery or major and minor operations. The unit also caters for full recovery of patients undergoing anaesthesia to return to their respective wards without complications. The operating theatre patient has increased from about 165 in 2009 to 361 in 2013.
The Hospital has 73-120 deliveries per month with 8 midwives manning the Maternity Unit and an average of over 1600 deliveries per annum (equivalent to a provincial hospital in PNG) with a Caesarean Section rate of 15%. The hospital routinely manages significant obstetric risk – for example mothers presenting who have poor nutrition, anaemia and other health problems that increase the risk of pregnancy and child birth.Under the watchful eyes of the Specialist Gynaecologist Dr. Paiva the staffs also manage complicated cases like PET, premature births, cross sections and ventoux delivery.
The maternity ward currently has an 11 beds capacity and caters for antenatal, labour and post natal clients.
The number of women coming to have their antenatal and delivery care at the hospital has risen from a few hundred in the 1990’s to over 1000 in are year. Patient are also referred in from the outer clinics around Port Moresby and from other centres in PNG. We estimate that 60% of births are using the facilities at Paradise Private Hospital. The maternity ward is headed by a very senior midwife with extensive experienced Sr. Helen Mokrom with a total of 8 midwives assisting her with the deliveries and antenatal work.
The Hospital operates a fully functional Antenatal Clinic that sees up to 20 women per day.
The General Ward is managed under the Supervision of Dr. John Tsiperau. The new wing of the hospital completed in 2009 has a total of premium 40 spacious beds. The ward caters for inpatients are referred from all other departments for care.
The outpatient unit caters for scheduled immunization, pre- employment medical check up, Medical Clearance for School, giving injections and other treatment to patients after consultations with the doctors, wound dressing and minor suturing. PPH has seen a significant increase in patients seeking services in the Outpatient/Daycare Unit.
